As India celebrates a decade of the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the scheme as a transformative initiative that has empowered millions of Indians to dream big and build their own enterprises. Launched in April 2015, the scheme was designed to provide collateral-free loans to micro and small businesses that were outside the formal credit system.

💬 PM Modi’s Message: Financial and Social Inclusion in Action

Marking the occasion, PM Modi congratulated beneficiaries across India, stating:

“Every Mudra loan carries with it dignity, self-respect and opportunity. In addition to financial inclusion, this scheme has also ensured social inclusion and economic freedom.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that the inclusivity of the scheme has been one of its biggest achievements. Nearly 50% of Mudra beneficiaries belong to SC, ST, and OBC communities, while over 70% are women—a powerful testament to the scheme’s role in advancing social equity and gender empowerment.

🚀 Game-Changer for Micro Enterprises

The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana was launched under the Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency (MUDRA) to “fund the unfunded.”

Key Features:

  • Collateral-free loans up to ₹20 lakh
  • Loans offered through Scheduled Commercial Banks, NBFCs, Regional Rural Banks, and Micro Finance Institutions
  • Targets non-corporate, non-farm micro and small enterprises

Impact So Far:

  • 52 crore loans sanctioned
  • ₹32.61 lakh crore in total disbursement
  • Massive outreach in rural and semi-urban areas
  • Boosted first-generation entrepreneurship across the country

🧵 Grassroots Businesses, Big Dreams

From tailoring shops and mobile repair stores to medicine distributors and local food vendors, Mudra Yojana has given small businesses the confidence and capital they need to succeed.

“I used to run a small medical shop,” said Nalini Kant Panda from Khordha, Odisha. “Thanks to Mudra, I received a ₹10 lakh loan without collateral. Today, I am a distributor for multiple pharmaceutical companies.”

Another Odisha-based entrepreneur, Shib Kumar Muni, echoed similar sentiments:

“Earlier, my business was small. But with the support of Mudra, I received a loan without any collateral. Now, I’ve grown significantly.”

These stories reflect how the scheme has empowered common citizens to become job creators rather than job seekers.

👩‍💼 Women-Led Development

One of the most significant aspects of PMMY is its focus on women empowerment. As per official data:

  • 68% of Mudra beneficiaries are women
  • Between FY16 and FY25, per-woman disbursement grew at 13% CAGR
  • States with higher women disbursement saw greater employment growth in MSMEs

This aligns with the government’s larger goal of promoting women-led development and fostering inclusive growth.

📊 Social Equity and Minority Participation

The MUDRA Yojana has also played a pivotal role in bridging social and economic gaps:

  • 50% of beneficiaries are from SC, ST, and OBC communities
  • 11% of Mudra loan holders belong to minority communities

This shows the scheme’s role in bringing marginalised communities into the formal economy, encouraging self-reliance and financial literacy.

🔄 Driving India’s Entrepreneurial Revolution

With Mudra Yojana, India has witnessed a grassroots entrepreneurial revolution. The simplicity of the loan process and the removal of collateral have democratized credit access and unlocked entrepreneurial energy across all sections of society.

As the nation marks #10YearsOfMUDRA, the initiative stands as a beacon of inclusive economic progress, transforming the lives of millions and driving the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).

📝 Conclusion

The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana has evolved into one of India’s most transformative welfare and financial inclusion initiatives, empowering small businesses and enabling socio-economic mobility across the nation.

For Odisha, and particularly districts like Khordha, the success stories of local entrepreneurs stand as powerful examples of how government policy can directly impact the lives of the people.
