Hirakud Mega Bridge to Transform Western Odisha Connectivity: Foundation Laid for State’s Longest Bridge

🚧 A Milestone in Infrastructure: Odisha’s Longest Bridge over Hirakud Reservoir

In a major boost to Western Odisha’s infrastructure and connectivity, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone for Odisha’s longest bridge on Thursday. The proposed 4-kilometre-long bridge will span the Hirakud reservoir, linking Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district with Ambabhona in Bargarh district.

This landmark project, pegged at ₹275 crore, is being funded through the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) and is expected to be completed within two and a half years.

🌉 Bridging the Past: Reconnecting Divided Communities

Post-independence, the construction of the Hirakud Dam—India’s first major multipurpose river valley project—led to widespread displacement and geographical disconnection of communities in western Odisha. For decades, people from Jharsuguda and Sambalpur had to travel long distances—often over 100 kilometres via Chhattisgarh—to reach Bargarh.

This new bridge will drastically reduce the travel distance between these key districts to just 12 kilometres, reviving social ties and economic exchanges that were lost due to the dam’s impact.

“It is going to be the longest bridge in Odisha. The proposed bridge will be constructed on the Hirakud reservoir,” stated Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, who was present at the foundation stone ceremony.

🏗️ Economic & Social Significance of the Project

Beyond the engineering feat, the bridge is expected to revitalise the regional economy by:

  • 🛣️ Enhancing inter-district and inter-state connectivity, especially with neighbouring Chhattisgarh
  • 🛍️ Facilitating faster movement of goods and services, thereby lowering transport costs
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Reuniting disconnected families and communities and reviving shared cultural heritage
  • 🌾 Boosting agricultural and local trade in western Odisha by offering direct market access
