In a landmark step aimed at streamlining the darshan experience for lakhs of devotees, the Odisha Government is all set to introduce ‘Dhadi Darshan’—a queue-based management system at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri. This significant reform was announced by Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan during his recent visit to Tara Tarini Temple in Berhampur.

The Dhadi Darshan system is likely to be rolled out by the end of this month, marking a pivotal shift in how temple devotees engage with the deities, especially during peak hours and festive occasions.

🔄 From Free Flow to Organized Darshan

Currently, darshan at Srimandir operates under a free-flow format, often leading to overcrowding, security concerns, and chaotic management—particularly during major festivals like Rath Yatra and Snana Purnima. The proposed queue system aims to:

  • Regulate crowd movement
  • Enhance safety and discipline
  • Provide a more fulfilling spiritual experience

This reform is expected to decongest the inner sanctum and offer better devotee management, with particular attention to elderly visitors, children, and women.

🏛️ Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee to be Formed

In a parallel development, the Law Minister confirmed that the long-pending Managing Committee for Srimandir will be officially constituted within a week. This committee will be tasked with:

  • Overseeing temple governance
  • Approving reforms like Dhadi Darshan
  • Implementing transparency in financial and administrative matters
  • Supervising the security and logistics of the temple premises

One of the committee’s first responsibilities will be to review the relocation of temple hundis (donation boxes). This move will require formal approvals from both the newly formed committee and the Odisha Government.

🙏 Reform-Oriented Temple Administration

Speaking to the media, Law Minister Harichandan highlighted that the introduction of Dhadi Darshan is part of a larger initiative to reform temple administration across the state. With Jagannath Temple being central to Odisha’s cultural and spiritual identity, the reforms are expected to serve as a model for other temples.

“The Managing Committee will not only focus on governance but also ensure better darshan experiences for all devotees,” said the Minister.

The government is also expected to introduce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guide the implementation of Dhadi Darshan and other reforms in temple protocols.

🚩 Why This Matters

The Shree Jagannath Temple, being a national pilgrimage centre, draws millions of devotees every year. Managing such large footfalls efficiently is vital for:

  • Devotee satisfaction and safety
  • Preservation of temple sanctity
  • Improving Odisha’s religious tourism sector
  • Ensuring preparedness for Rath Yatra 2025

With modern technology and administrative efficiency, the government is aiming to ensure that tradition and discipline go hand in hand.

✅ Conclusion

The Dhadi Darshan initiative marks a transformative shift in Odisha’s temple governance. Coupled with the formation of the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee, these changes signify a renewed focus on order, accessibility, and safety in one of India’s most revered spiritual landmarks.

As the temple prepares for a streamlined darshan experience, these reforms will not only benefit devotees but also ensure that Srimandir sets a benchmark for temple administration across India.
