In a pioneering step toward improving child health and nutrition, Odisha has become the first state in India to launch a pilot programme that aims to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool for monitoring child growth. The initiative seeks to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of anthropometric measurements conducted by anganwadi workers.

🎯 What is the Objective of the AI Pilot?

The AI pilot project titled “AI for Growth Monitoring: Development of an AI Tool for Child Anthropometry” aims to:

  • Automate the measurement of key indicators such as weight, height, head circumference, and chest circumference
  • Use short videos captured on smartphones by anganwadi workers
  • Improve precision and consistency in child growth assessments
  • Enable early detection of malnutrition

👩‍⚕️ Training Module for Field Workers Launched

A five-day training workshop was inaugurated by Shubha Sarma, Principal Secretary, Women & Child Development Department, Odisha.

During the event, a dedicated training module was introduced to instruct field workers on proper data collection techniques. These efforts are part of a collaborative initiative involving:

  • Ministry of Women & Child Development (MoWCD)
  • Wadhwani AI
  • ICMR-RMRC Bhubaneswar
  • Poshan Abhiyaan

📱 How Will the AI Tool Work?

The AI tool will be designed to capture and analyse videos taken with simple smartphones to:

  • Record accurate anthropometric data
  • Minimise human error in measurements
  • Ensure uniformity across field-level data collection
  • Strengthen data-driven interventions in child nutrition

This marks a technological leap in implementing Poshan Abhiyaan, India’s flagship programme to fight malnutrition.

📊 Data Collection Across Six Districts

After completing the training, field investigators will conduct a targeted data collection drive in the following districts:

  1. Balasore
  2. Cuttack
  3. Ganjam
  4. Jajpur
  5. Keonjhar
  6. Mayurbhanj

The exercise will last 3–4 months and serve as the base for:

  • Building the AI model
  • Pilot testing
  • Future statewide implementation

🧠 Why This Matters for Odisha and India

This initiative puts Odisha at the forefront of AI adoption in public health, aligning with national and global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially:

  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger
  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being

It also reinforces India’s Digital Health Mission and strengthens grassroots health systems by empowering anganwadi workers with easy-to-use digital tools.

✅ Conclusion

The launch of India’s first AI-based child growth monitoring tool in Odisha is a milestone in governance, health, and technology integration. If successful, the model could be replicated across other states, bringing precision, scalability, and innovation to child nutrition programmes nationwide.
