India’s First International University for the Blind to be Set Up in Odisha’s Cuttack
In a landmark development, Cuttack is set to become home to India’s first international university for the blind. The central government has identified a 40-acre site near Baranga in the Cuttack district for this pioneering institution, marking a significant step towards inclusive education and skill development for visually impaired individuals.
The decision follows a visit by a central government team, which selected the site for its accessibility and proximity to key educational and transportation hubs. Cuttack Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde emphasized that the location is ideal for students and teaching staff, ensuring smooth connectivity with the Cuttack-Khordha periphery.
Santha Kabi Bhima Bhoi: A Fitting Tribute
Reports indicate that the government is considering naming the university after Santha Kabi Bhima Bhoi, a revered 19th-century Odia poet and social reformer who was himself visually impaired. Bhima Bhoi’s profound literary and philosophical contributions, centered around social justice and empowerment, make him an ideal figure to represent this initiative.

India has over 50 lakh blind individuals, with Odisha alone accounting for more than 5.21 lakh, including 2 lakh young people. Despite this large population, specialized educational institutions for the visually impaired remain scarce.
