Vedanta to Invest ₹1 Lakh Crore in Odisha: Aluminium Park and New Plant to Boost Economy

In a significant boost to Odisha’s industrial sector, Vedanta Ltd. has announced the establishment of a modern aluminium park in Jharsuguda, alongside a new 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) aluminium plant in Rayagada district. The total investment for these projects will be ₹1 lakh crore, making it one of the largest industrial investments in the state.

This initiative aligns with the ‘Make in Odisha’ campaign, aimed at promoting industrial growth, attracting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and generating large-scale employment.

🏗️ Key Highlights of the Aluminium Park

  • 🔹 Location: Jharsuguda, Odisha
  • 🔹 Area: 253 acres
  • 🔹 MSME Units: 100+ expected to set up operations
  • 🔹 Employment Generation: 2 lakh jobs
  • 🔹 Investment: Part of ₹1 lakh crore industrial development plan

According to Vedanta, the aluminium park will create a thriving ecosystem for MSMEs, offering them access to high-quality raw materials and infrastructure. This will help Odisha emerge as a global aluminium manufacturing hub.

🏭 3 MTPA Aluminium Plant in Rayagada

Apart from the Jharsuguda aluminium park, Vedanta will establish a 3 MTPA aluminium plant in Rayagada district. This plant will significantly increase India’s aluminium production capacity, supporting industries such as automobiles, aerospace, and construction.

Vedanta already has a 1.8 MTPA aluminium smelter in Jharsuguda and a 3.5 MTPA alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Kalahandi. With these new investments, Odisha is set to strengthen its position as India’s leading aluminium producer.

🌍 Strategic Importance for Odisha and India

  • ✔️ Economic Growth: The investment will boost Odisha’s GDP and enhance industrial output.
  • ✔️ Job Creation: The project will generate 2 lakh direct and indirect jobs, significantly benefiting local communities.
  • ✔️ Boost to MSMEs: More than 100 MSMEs will be integrated into the supply chain, promoting entrepreneurship.
  • ✔️ Self-Reliance in Aluminium Production: The project supports Atmanirbhar Bharat by reducing import dependence.

Speaking about the investment, Vedanta Aluminium’s COO, Sunil Gupta, said:

“Our journey in Odisha has been transformative. From women-led operations to sustainable growth initiatives, we are committed to shaping Odisha’s bright future. This ₹1 lakh crore investment reflects our strong belief in Odisha’s potential to lead India’s industrial revolution.”

✍️ MoU Signed Under ‘Make in Odisha’ Initiative

Vedanta signed an MoU with the Odisha government during the ‘Utkarsh Odisha – Make in Odisha Conclave’ in January 2024 for the development of these projects. The investment aligns with the state’s long-term vision of becoming a global manufacturing hub and boosting employment through industrial expansion.

Odisha has been a preferred destination for Vedanta, with mining operations in multiple districts, a world-class smelter facility in Jharsuguda, and refineries in Kalahandi. The latest investments further reinforce Odisha’s status as a key player in India’s industrial growth story.

✅ Conclusion

The establishment of Vedanta’s Aluminium Park in Jharsuguda and a new aluminium plant in Rayagada will transform Odisha’s industrial landscape. With a ₹1 lakh crore investment, 2 lakh jobs, and a strong boost to MSMEs, this initiative is expected to accelerate economic growth and position Odisha as a global leader in aluminium production.

This marks a major step in India’s journey towards self-reliance in aluminium manufacturing, reinforcing Odisha’s role as a powerhouse of industrial development.
