100-Day Intensified TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan: A Major Step Towards a Tuberculosis-Free India

India has made remarkable progress in its fight against tuberculosis (TB) with the successful conclusion of the 100-day Intensified TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. Launched by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on December 7, 2023, the campaign concluded on March 24, 2024, setting a strong foundation for a TB-free India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted this achievement, emphasizing the significant strides made in reducing TB cases and improving public health infrastructure.

📌 Key Highlights of the 100-Day TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan

The campaign targeted 455 high-priority districts across 33 States and Union Territories (UTs), aiming to accelerate TB case detection, reduce mortality, and prevent new infections. According to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, the campaign reached vulnerable populations across the country, achieving significant milestones:

  • 12.97 crore individuals screened from vulnerable populations.
  • 7.19 lakh TB patients notified — out of which 2.85 lakh cases were asymptomatic.
  • ✅ Over 13.46 lakh Nikshay Shivirs (health camps) conducted to support TB diagnosis and treatment.
  • 4.17 lakh individuals from high-risk environments (prisons, mines, tea gardens, construction sites) were screened and tested for TB.

🌍 Community Engagement and Support

A key aspect of the campaign was Jan Bhagidari (community participation). More than 30,000 elected representatives, corporate partners, and ordinary citizens actively supported the initiative. Additionally:

  • 🔸 Over 21,000 TB awareness activities were conducted during festivals, involving faith-based leaders and community influencers.
  • 🔸 1,05,181 new Ni-kshay Mitras were enrolled, providing nutritional support to TB-affected families.

🏆 A Strong Foundation for Future Action

JP Nadda described the campaign as “just the beginning,” highlighting the government’s commitment to scaling up these efforts nationwide. The focus will be on ensuring that all citizens have equal access to:

  • ➡️ Modern diagnostic facilities
  • ➡️ Quality treatment
  • ➡️ Community support for recovery and prevention

🚀 Towards a TB-Free India by 2025

India aims to eliminate TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The success of the 100-day Intensified TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan reflects the nation’s determination to achieve this goal through coordinated government action and active community participation.

The progress made under this campaign underscores the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment, and sustained public awareness in tackling TB. As Prime Minister Modi stated, “India’s fight against TB is witnessing remarkable progress” — a testament to the power of collective action and strategic public health interventions.
