In a pioneering development aimed at improving passenger convenience, researchers at IIT Bhubaneswar have created a smart mobile and web application called ‘Simply-Swap’, which allows train passengers to seamlessly swap their seats with fellow travelers. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance comfort and travel experience, especially on long journeys.
🔄 What is the ‘Simply-Swap’ App?
The ‘Simply-Swap’ app is a tech-driven solution created by students Rustam Kumar and Sangam Mishra, under the mentorship of faculty members Srikant Gollapudi and Srinivas Pinisetty. Developed within the campus of IIT Bhubaneswar, this app aims to tackle the common inconvenience faced by Indian train passengers — the inability to easily change seats according to personal preferences or requirements.
🧠 How Does the App Work?
The application allows registered users to:
- Post a seat swap request by entering:
- Current seat details
- Desired seat or coach number
- Train number and travel date
- View available swap options from other passengers on the same train.
- Accept a swap offer, once a suitable match is found.
Once both parties agree, the app facilitates coordination, eliminating the need for passengers to manually look for alternatives or make informal requests during the journey.
“The app reduces the stress and confusion involved in manually negotiating seat changes with strangers,” IIT Bhubaneswar said in a statement.
🚆 Potential Integration with Indian Railways
Researchers believe that integration of Simply-Swap with Indian Railways’ official services such as IRCTC could revolutionise train travel across the country. If adopted on a national scale, the app could:
- Reduce inconvenience during peak travel seasons
- Allow families and elderly travelers to sit together
- Enable better usage of vacant seats or preferred coaches
💼 Plans for Commercialisation
The IIT Bhubaneswar team is already in discussion with start-ups and venture capitalists to commercialise the Simply-Swap platform. The app’s potential for scalability and real-world impact has attracted interest from stakeholders in the tech and travel sectors.
If successful, Simply-Swap could emerge as a flagship innovation from Odisha in the national mobility and transport tech ecosystem.
🌐 Tech for the People: Why This Innovation Matters
This development aligns with India’s push for Digital Public Infrastructure and reflects how academic institutions like IIT Bhubaneswar are contributing to citizen-centric innovation.
With millions of Indians relying on train travel every day, a solution like Simply-Swap can:
- Improve travel efficiency
- Empower passengers with choice
- Strengthen tech-enabled governance in public transportation
✅ Conclusion
The development of the Simply-Swap app by IIT Bhubaneswar is a significant milestone in the use of technology to solve everyday problems faced by the common man. As Odisha continues to emerge as a hub of innovation, this app stands as a proud symbol of student-led ingenuity and practical problem-solving.
If supported and integrated with official railway systems, Simply-Swap could soon become a standard feature in Indian train travel — bringing comfort, flexibility, and digital empowerment to the railway journey.
