Major Anti-Maoist Operation in Chhattisgarh: 16 Naxalites Killed, Weapons Recovered

In a significant blow to Naxalite insurgency in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, security forces eliminated 16 Naxalites in a fierce encounter on March 30, 2024. The operation, launched by a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), resulted in the recovery of a large cache of weapons and explosives.

🔥 Encounter in Sukma: What Happened?

According to Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range, Sundarraj P, the encounter broke out around 8 AM in the Kerlapal forest area under Kerlapal police station. The joint security team was conducting an anti-Naxalite operation based on intelligence inputs regarding Maoist movement in the area.

“Bodies of 16 Naxalites have been recovered from the encounter site so far. The operation is still underway,”IGP Sundarraj P.

Two DRG personnel sustained injuries during the exchange of fire but are reported to be in stable condition.

🔎 Security Forces in Action

The operation began on Friday night (March 29, 2024), when security forces received credible intelligence about a large gathering of Maoists in the forests of Sukma.

A joint team of:

  • ✔️ District Reserve Guard (DRG)
  • ✔️ Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

was immediately mobilized to neutralize the Maoist threat.

The security forces strategically surrounded the Naxal hideout, leading to a heavy gunfight early Saturday morning.

⚡ Weapons & Explosives Seized

Following the encounter, security forces recovered a significant cache of arms and explosives from the site, indicating the Maoists were well-armed.

🔫 Weapons Seized:

  • AK-47 rifle
  • Self-Loading Rifle (SLR)
  • INSAS rifle
  • .303 rifle
  • Rocket Launcher
  • Barrel Grenade Launcher (BGL)
  • Explosive materials

The recovery of rocket launchers and barrel grenade launchers suggests that the Naxalites were preparing for a major offensive.

Currently, a search operation is underway to secure the area and trace any remaining Maoists who might have escaped.

📊 Rising Maoist Casualties in 2024

The latest operation marks a significant success in the ongoing fight against Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) in Chhattisgarh.

  • ✔️ 132 Naxalites killed in 2024 across Chhattisgarh.
  • ✔️ 116 Naxalites killed in Bastar division alone (which includes districts like Bijapur, Sukma, Dantewada, and Narayanpur).

Security forces have intensified anti-Maoist operations in recent months, leading to increased casualties among Naxal groups.

🛡️ Strategic Importance of Sukma & Bastar Region

The Bastar region, which includes Sukma, Dantewada, and Bijapur, has long been a Maoist stronghold. The area is densely forested, making it an ideal hiding ground for Naxalite guerillas.

However, recent government initiatives and security operations have significantly weakened the insurgency.

🔴 The Government’s Strategy Against Maoism

The Indian government has been following a two-pronged strategy to tackle Naxalism:

1️⃣ Security Crackdown:

  • ✔️ Increased deployment of security forces in Maoist-affected areas.
  • ✔️ Use of advanced technology for intelligence gathering.
  • ✔️ Specialized counter-insurgency units like DRG and Greyhounds.

2️⃣ Development Initiatives:

  • ✔️ Building roads & infrastructure in remote villages.
  • ✔️ Employment programs for tribal youth.
  • ✔️ Strengthening local governance & police presence.

These measures have dented the operational capabilities of Maoists, forcing them into retreat.

🔔 Conclusion

The Sukma encounter is a major victory for India’s security forces in the fight against Left-Wing Extremism. With 16 Naxalites eliminated and a large cache of weapons seized, the operation marks another step towards restoring peace in Chhattisgarh.

Security forces remain on high alert, and further operations are expected to eradicate the Maoist threat from the region.
