In a significant development for India’s internal security and anti-insurgency efforts, 26 Naxalites, including three with bounties on their heads, surrendered before the security forces in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Monday. This event marks another success under the ‘Lon Varratu’ (Return to Your Village) campaign—an initiative aimed at weaning away misguided youth from the Maoist insurgency.
🛑 Why Did They Surrender?
According to Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai, the surrendered cadres cited several reasons for giving up arms:
- Disillusionment with the Maoist ideology
- Harsh forest life and deteriorating living conditions
- Infighting and internal contradictions within the Maoist ranks
- Desire to return to the social mainstream
These individuals turned themselves in to senior officials from the Chhattisgarh Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), indicating growing trust in the government’s surrender and rehabilitation policies.
👤 Who Were the Surrendered Cadres?
The surrendered Maoists belonged to various wings of the CPI (Maoist), including:
- Janmilitia
- Revolutionary Party Committee (RPC)
- Janatana Sarkar
- Front organisations like Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangathan (DAKMS) and Chetna Natya Mandli (CNM)
High-Value Surrenders:
- Rajesh Kashyap – Janmilitia Commander, ₹3 lakh bounty
- Kosa Madvi – Janatana Sarkar leader, ₹1 lakh bounty
- Chhotu Kunjam – CNM member, ₹50,000 bounty
🔎 Role of Security Forces and Intelligence
The surrender was facilitated by the 111th, 195th, 230th, and 231st CRPF Battalions along with the local intelligence unit. Their coordinated ground-level efforts and trust-building initiatives have played a crucial role in encouraging Maoist cadres to abandon violence and reintegrate into society.
📈 The ‘Lon Varratu’ Campaign: A Success Story
Launched in June 2020, the ‘Lon Varratu’ campaign—meaning “Return to your home/village” in the local Gondi dialect—has proved instrumental in turning many Naxalites away from the path of extremism.
Key Figures:
- 953 Naxalites have surrendered in Dantewada district alone since the launch
- 224 of them were carrying monetary rewards
- In 2024 alone, 792 Maoists surrendered across the Bastar region (comprising 7 districts, including Dantewada)
🧭 Strategic Significance
The surrender of these 26 cadres holds strategic significance:
- Weakens the operational capacity of Maoist organisations
- Boosts morale of security forces and public confidence
- Enhances peace and development in Maoist-affected regions
- Reinforces the success of a rehabilitation-first approach in counter-insurgency policy
🏁 Conclusion
The recent surrender of 26 Naxalites in Dantewada under the Lon Varratu campaign is a landmark moment in India’s anti-Naxal strategy. It reflects the changing mindset among Maoist foot soldiers and the growing appeal of peace and integration over violence and isolation. As security forces and civil administrations continue to work in tandem, the campaign holds the promise of a more peaceful and development-oriented future for the tribal heartlands of India.
